A Birthmom's Adoption Plan.

Everyday, Birthmoms around the country are making what has become to be known as the “Third Choice”…adoption. With this choice, a whole new set of decisions now face her and her support network.

The making of an Adoption Plan for her unborn or newborn child is the Birthmom's way of helping to set her child on a life-long path of love and success. The choices made now will be carried with her and with her child for the rest of each of their lives.

Here are some decisions that are a part of this Adoption Plan:

  • How involved does she want to be in selecting adopting parents?
  • If she wishes to be involved in the selection process for parents, what will these parents “look like”? That is, does she want a specific age range, ethnicity, occupation, family background, etc.
  • How involved will her family and friends be in making these decisions?
  • After the adoption, does she want any communication with the adopting parents?
  • Who will be her medical doctor?
  • How will the medical expenses be paid? Is there insurance or can she use Medicare?
  • What hospital will she use?
  • Who will be her coach in the delivery room?
  • Will the front desk be authorized to release her room number or will it be kept confidential?
  • After delivery, in which hospital wing will she stay…maternity or another?
  • How much information will she want about the baby?...its sex, weight, height, etc.
  • Will she or her family want to see and/or hold the baby?
  • While in the hospital, will she take care of the baby during the days prior to signing the papers and release?
  • When choosing an attorney, will she select her own or will she use the adopting parents' attorney?
  • When signing the papers, who will she want with her in addition to her attorney?
  • Will she be identifying the baby's father?
  • How much influence will the Birthdad have in this process?

The Birthmom can choose to pursue a traditional “agency adoption”, where she takes no part in the selection of the adopting parents. For many women, this is the best choice. They may feel it is easier and less painful emotionally. They may not “have what it takes” to go through the parent selection process. For many women, this is the perfect choice, and it is right and good for her.

Other Birthmoms want to be very involved in selecting the parents for her child. They may not know exactly what they want in parents…but they know it when they see it. And so, through various channels, they look to find the perfect parents for their child.

In either case above, you, as hopeful adopting parents, can present yourselves to these Birthmoms in a non-identifying way, if they learn about you. This is EXACTLY what Members.JourneyToAdoption.com WILL TEACH YOU!!! You will learn how to "shine like a beacon" to these wonderful women.
