After my wife’s emergency hysterectomy at the age of 27, we took two years to make the big decision to pursue parenthood through adoption. It was New Years Day when we both came to the same conclusion at the same time. We were going to GO FOR IT.

We thought, "What a great way to start a new year." So we began our adoption search like most people do. We opened our local yellow page directory and started to call local adoption agencies.

"Unfortunately", they said, "our Korean program is rather slow now, and we are not currently taking applications." In fact they said it would be one to two years before we could register an application! What? Just to file a registration form? Our hearts sank.

Not to be discouraged, we called another agency.

This time we were told that they only took applications once each year. For that particular year, it would be March 20th. As it was January 2nd when I called, we would have to wait 2 1⁄2 months just for the "Application meeting".

Oh ... and if that wasn’t bad enough, only 40 to 50 people would be allowed in their meeting. So if they had more than 50 people interested, they would randomly draw names to pick who could attend. The agency representative also reminded us that the waiting time for a healthy domestic infant was about 2 to 3 years.

Our hearts sank further.

As we continued to call, our hearts continued to sink. Could this really be the case? Two, three . . . even four years? We were heartbroken.
